The configuration of luggage has evolved. Some say it’s the journey not the destination, but it’s really the packing before the journey, or the journey will be mired in frustrations as your mind is still unwinding and running checklist after checklist.
Still looks like the back of the Beverly Hillbillies truck.
I’ll nail it tomorrow.
Stayed last night in Fort Bragg. The salesman who sold me the bike is named Jeff Bragg. Jeff is fun and full of laughs, fort Bragg is foggy and dull. A Purgatory dropped down in the middle of paradise.
I got up at 4:20am and decided to get out of there before the town ended at the fog bank, like that Twilight Zone episode.
Yikes.
It was time to wake up the deer and the antelope with the sound of thunder.
It was time to ride.
Lots of critters were running about on the roadway in the dark. It’s always dark under the redwoods even at noon, dark and unnaturally cold. A tiny fawn ran out front of me twice and on two separate corners as I descended down a switchback. I tried to capture it on the go pro but wasn’t quick on enough on the trigger.
As the sun came up the day rolled on and then opened up into something kind of wonderful.
I fired up the GoPro and this tiny drone that flies around the bike.

I came out of the woods after a million turns through a trillion trees, redwoods mostly. It flattened out, and a local suggested I take 36 to the 3 to avoid the fires. That’s all he had to say, and I was sold on a new route, destination Juniper Woods and Scott Huckabay’s off the grid estate. That’s his music in the video and the other links on previous pages.
I’m a sucker for horses, so there’s bound to be as many pics of horses as the Harley.
The white one wouldn’t do anytime interesting
…. so I shot him.
Just kidding. That’s only the second time I’ve seen a horse lay down like that and nap. I was always told they sleep standing up…but why stand up when you can lay it down?
Almost forgot the additional obligatory bike pics:
Then the air horn blew, but not like a horn should, it “blew” like the last one did. Short lived quality. Damn, and I liked that one, so did the kids, but not the texting tourists. Only way to stop them from ramming you on the freeway….a horn that sounds like a train’s a commin.
I would hit the button half way for a sound like a duck on steroids to thank people, and full blast for lesser emotions. I hit it to thank someone on the switch backs and nada… silence. I hate that, could mean the whole handlebar switch mechanism is dead..but everything else worked. It’s probably a fuse I think, but can’t find anything. Called Johnny Rocket, my ace mechanic, and he thinks maybe a wire broke in the mechanism. The last airhorn was a Howard’s Horn. Cheap piece of Chinese crap with plastic and chrome paint, the thing sounded like a dying duck after just a few weeks. I should have let Johnny Rocket find me a horn, but no, I had to trust the internet.
Numerous tweaks and it finally failed. The manufacturer tried to blame me for not reading the instructions that said it had to be coated with cheep car wax to protect the “chrome”.
Just can’t get quality products anymore, except of course from Callahan auto parts.
So I’ll make camp in Redding and wait for the Harley dealership to open…. stay tuned….and thanks for rolling with me!
